My approach to counseling is a Biblically based approach utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as the foundation, as well as a "systemic" framework utilizing a number of empirically supported therapies including Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Rational-Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT).
I work with clients in a variety of formats including individuals, couples and families of all ages and backgrounds with the exception of children under the age of six unless accompanied by a parent/guardian.
NOW OFFERING MARRIAGE INTENSIVES
Since the closure of the Smalley Institute on September 30, 2022, I am now offering 1, 2, or 3 day marriage intensives --- either in person at my Haughton office or through a secure on-line telehealth platform.
- The intensive format has proven itself as a more effective means of providing marital therapy with a 90% success rate.
- The intensive format is an "all-day" session which typically runs from 9AM to 5PM each day. The benefit of the intensive format (over traditional weekly sessions) is that the intensive provides ample time to explore issues and receive assistance based on empirically proven techniques.
- As an added feature, each couple is given the opportunity of completing the Gottman Relationship Checkup (as well as others) which will provide visual evidence of both Strength and Growth areas.
- I am also available to facilitate a "group marriage intensive" at your location. (Great for weekend couples retreat).

Gottman Relationship Checkup
Dr. John Gottman's 40+ years of research has led him in the development of the Gottman Sound Relationship House (SRH) model of therapy. This model was developed through "experiential" and "longitudinal" data collected while working with real couples in what has been referred to as "the Love Lab" in which couples volunteered for the research project for discovering the "factors" that contribute to "happily married" and couples that later divorce. The research was based on what Gottman calls, "The Triad of Balance" which consists of 3 domains: 1) Interactive Behavior, 2) Perception, and 3) Physiology. When I first learned of Gottman's research, he was able to accurately predict whether a couple would be successful or fail in their marriage based on his observations using this model - with 96% accuracy.
Based upon his research, Gottman has now developed an assessment tool called "Gottman Connect" that measures a couple's level of functionality based on this model - and it can be done on-line through an approved Gottman clinician.
Gottman has written such books as "Why Marriages Succeed or Fail", "The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work", "10 Lessons to Transform Your Marriage" and many more.
